Ducati 996sps, 99-01
SPS=Sport Production Special
Factory Pro Series "D996"

As compared to the previous model 916, the 996 sps has new air intake system and dual 50mm dual "TB mounted" fuel injectors. (not to be confused with the "shower injector" setup mounted above the velocity stack ala the 54mm's on the 748rs).
The 996 sps has larger 98 mm pistons, larger valves, a stronger crankshaft and crankcases as compared to the 916 sps.
The 916's claimed 83.5 kW (112 bhp crank hp) compares to the SPS's claimed 92.4 kW (124 bhp crank hp).

Note:
The 996 SPS injectors are both mounted ON the 50mm throttle bodies.
The 996 SPS has a "dual injector system", but not a "shower injector" system.
A true "dual injector / shower injector setup" (748rs for example) system would mount the second injector above the velocity stacks to spray into the airstream.

Why spray way out there?
Spraying upstream of the air inlet allows the sprayed fuel more time to evaporate for better burning and by evaporating, it also cools the intake air, making the air denser - therefore, more power.
As much as 2% to 3% better is some cases.

 IAW-16 ecu

The 1.6 is the better of the 2 computers, the IAW 16 features sequential injection control and temp and baro. correction. most all the 99-00 sps's are IAW 16's.

996sps, 99-01
with IAW-16 ecu (small size ecu)
(fix full throttle / low rpm running, pulls harder everywhere, makes more full throttle power, decreases compression braking affect - Factory Pro exclusive / EC997 dyno developed - super SMOOTH cruise!)

This is the 1.6 Magneti Marelli ecu that the Factory Pro chip works in. The older P-8 is larger and pretty much square.

Most all 1999 and 2000 models had the 1.6 ecu installed. A few 2001's were imported with the old P-8 ecu - and this chip does not work in the P-8.
If you want a decent running bike that has a P-8 ecu, swap out ecu's to a 1.6. There are some wiring issues that need to be addressed by your local Duc guru.

996 SPS

This is THE Chip that civilizes the 996 SPS.

Tired of hearing
"The reason the 996 SPS runs poorly is:"
1. "It's the c****y gas we have here"
and.....
2. It's a racebike - it's not supposed to run at low rpm..."

Well - here's the story....
1. The 996 SPS doesn't run well in:
the US, Canada, Germany, the UK, Ireland. South Africa, Denmark, Bermuda, and even ITALY.  :-)
So - even in Italy, where the bike was originally tuned, it didn't run well.

2. It's a racebike.....
The 996 SPS doesn't run well at low rpm AND part throttle / high rpm. Every race bike in the world has to run at part throttle - and the stock 996 SPS actually cuts out at full throttle / low rpm. No wonder the teams that raced them replaced the ECU with a programmable one and hired an electronics engineer to run it.

Well - we figured out the chip tuning issue and custom tuned many, many AMA Pro Thunder Ducatis - stock and modified in our EC997 dyno facility at many AMA National Roadraces. Talk about acid test.

FIX part throttle operation, removes 3k stumbling, 4k-5.5k flat spot, pulls harder through midrange and topend, runs right at part throttle - even at 9k - even in neutral!!
Cruises better -  much nicer bike, now!

996sps, 99-01 (all) and  01(usa)
with P-8 ecu (large, square ecu)

The P8 doesn't allow sequential injector tuning, so that EC997 dyno tuning detail of super smooth, is improved but not as good as the above IAW 16 ecu.
 P-8 ecu

(usually with Ducati "71" chip)
A lot of 2001 sps's are P-8's -
the P-8 is the larger of the 2 ECU's as compared to the above IAW 16. The P-8 is a "basic" FI ECU.

I don't want to sell the chip as a dropin - The results are still that the idle and off-idle is a bit sloppy - regardless of tuning.
The custom tune will make it the best it can be - but, it will never be as clean as the IAW-16 ECU equipped bikes -
Marc

How to check and see if you guessed the right ECU....
I'd prefer that you don't guess!
The duc's are pretty easy to check - Lift the seat.  If it's an IAW 16, it's probably labeled is small print on the top and if it's not,   use a 10mm wrench to unbolt the ECU, flip it over,  read and verify the P-8 part number label.
Custom Tune:
Anybody who purchases one of our standard chips from us, as listed above, is eligible for chip credit as applied towards a full custom mapset as done on the Low Inertia EC997 dyno  with 4 Gas EGA.
I'll take our current listed chip price and apply it towards our current custom mapset charges. Today's example: $1200 - $380 = $820
Note - our custom mapset is NOT what a dynojet dyno purports to do. All fuel and ignition settings are optimized for best power - not a fictitious, mythical, smoke and mirror "A/F Ratio".

Lightweight Shift Centering Spring

For when you decide that you want lighter feeling shift lever action for better feel.
A lighter foot shift pressure is less unsettling.
Decreases lever effort required to make a shift.
Makes foot shift pressure more like other sportbikes.
Since you are not having to push so hard to move the lever, it's easier to find neutral.

Like your rearsets? But, no matter how you lube, shim, adjust the arcs, angles and lengths, it's still annoyingly stiff to shift?

Factorini Provente

Hybrid Ceramic Pro Shift Kit

Love the bike? Wish it shifted better? Hard to find neutral?

The famous Factorini Provente Shift Kit is now available for the Ducati Twins.

Factorini Provente designed and manufactured Microbearing Detent Arm and Factorini Provente designed Detent Spring will firm up the shift feel and virtually eliminates missed shifts - both upshifting and downshifting and neutral is easier to find.

Trackday and race bikes

Eliminates the need for that old, annoying "ducati trick" of removing the "really kinda necessary" neutral detent that was done to quicken up the shifting on trackday and race bikes - all too often...... (did I mention that when I put a bike in neutral on the dyno, that I really prefer it to STAY in neutral and not "wander into 1st gear by itself? :-)

Shifts quicker.  Misses fewer shifts.
Perfect to install when working on the clutch.

Remove the clutch assembly, remove the RH engine cover  - bolt in the kit.

Includes: Factorini Provente Microbearing Detent Arm and Factorini Provente Detent Spring.
(This kit does not include a clutch cover gasket)

Installation: Less than 2 hours to install with impact wrench and large socket set.

Can I install it myself?  Yes - If you can remove the clutch assembly, you can do this.

Good positive feel to all gears up and down, biggest improvement is selecting neutral, far better than stock.
I can highly recommend the upgrade.

Ducati 996 SPS

The bike

The 996sps is an exclusive bike - delivering incredible handling, light weight and powerful engine output - and an exhaust sound that is second to none.

While most of the bike is almost perfect, the FI mapping, is, well, just OK.
Cruise smoothness is usually of so-so quality -  snap engine response is pretty good and topend / full throttle power is all right.

Eprom/Chip Performance benefits

So - what is there to gain from replacing the stock "chip" or "eprom"?

2nd cruise operation could be "silky", engine snap response could be very lively and full throttle power at high rpm could be improved - closer to other contemporary twins.

Just like we did this year with the Aprilia Mille's, using the EC997 4 Gas EGA Low inertia dyno systems, (less common and much more finely developed than any current dj dynos)  we have developed a set of fuel maps, air temp correction maps, coolant temp correction maps, cylinder compensation maps, offset maps and acceleration maps that optimize engine performance beyond any other current retail maps or power commanders of any configuration.

*Additional benefit*
Engine Braking under closed throttle

Engine braking, under closed throttle is made more somewhat softer - allowing smoother riding under more conditions!
Excellent improvement and will improve riding performance while riding the "twisties"!

How and why was that done?
First - engine braking is usually decreased with a problematic "slipper" clutch on competition bikes for smoothest, quickest riding - keeping rear wheel traction longer.
Because we work with major race teams, we know what a rider needs to perform best, we worked hard to subtly massage maps to help deliver less engine braking. Can you do that with any silly "Auto Tuned" procedure? Absolutely "Not".
It takes a human being to adjust maps to "feel" best. A computer CAN'T do that. It can only go by inhuman numbers.
Inhuman tuning? Go slower.
Lovingly hand crafted maps? Go quicker!

From the tuners with more (successful) mc Fuel Injection tuning experience than just about any other USA company.....
(we tune Bosch, Denso, Mag-Mar, Suzuki and
pc's (if it's the only option).

A 996sps chip that works.
At full throttle, part throttle, closed throttle and every point in between!

These chips deliver smooth running at cruise, full throttle AND at part throttle - even at 3k and 9k rpm!
Smooth. Silk. More power, everywhere.
That's about it. Simple.

How did WE do it - and not the others?
You would need a 4 Gas EGA EC997 Low Inertia Eddy Current Dyno to know.
We developed the FLUX Factor.
Smooth cruise.
We designed the dyne system around it.
We use the same dyne system that we sell.

No other dyno will provide the dyno information required to improve the 996sps as much as we have.
Period.

We take trade-ins on competing dyno systems.

Still tuning by luck?

Stop.

What does it take to design a map for a fuel injection system? A few things.

An exquisite low inertia dyno, the 4 Gas EC997, that can measure part throttle engine smoothness (State of the Art dyno feature - and not a dj feature)
A willing customer or 2 or 3.....
30 years of experience performance tuning for power and tuning street motorcycles for low speed / part throttle drivability - We don't have to mention Aprilia, Yoshimura, Muzzy, Honda, Yamaha US as users....
Software to find maps and index maps.
Realtime Emulators, EPROM burners, UV EPROM Erasers, lots and lots of chips.....

Lot's of test rides....... (Gee - that's a "bummer"! :-))

Patience. Patience. Patience. Dedication. A desire to do the best.

The Magneti-Marrelli ECU's and "shower type" 748r injector setup used on the Ducati has unique issues, among other things.
If one has the patience to properly tune, one can fine tune to the perfection - if you have the time, the tuning experience and the 4 Gas EC997 dyno.
You'd have to tune by "luck" on another brand of dyno with a 900# drum and an eddy current brake hug on the side of it and an o2 sensor that provides false "A/F Ratios"

Power and Drivability to the 748r and 996! The Most and Best.

Idle quality
After installing the Factory Pro Eprom or any Eprom, you may find,
due to the differences in each and every individual bike, that the idle quality will change - sometimes for the better - sometimes, not.....
If you install a different Eprom, and the idle quality or speed changes, (and, actually, as a general rule), you should adjust the Idle mixture.  How?
Pretty easy -
Locate the small potentiometer on the side of the ECU (uses a very small flat bladed screwdriver to adjust) and, as the bike is warmed up and running at idle, turn the adjusting screw either way till you find the setting that produces the highest rpm idle. Done?
Congratulations - you have just tuned the idle circuit! Back down the idle speed to desired speed and recheck your "pot" setting.
Don't fret about which way on the "pot" is leaner and which way is richer - it makes no difference - just find the "happy" place.
"Blip" the throttle a bit and verify that the bike comes back down to a stable idle.

Put everything back together and go for a ride!

Thanks to Scott at DesMoto in San Francisco, CA for the assistance.

Marc,
Sorry for not emailing you sooner, I've been too busy riding my bike!
The chip you developed for my 748R is simply awesome. I still can't believe the improvement in low/midrange power and throttle response. I was getting tired of hearing all the reasons other tuning experts were giving about not being able to fix the 1500 rpm wide flatspot from 4K to 5.5K. The bike now pulls hard from any rpm and from any throttle position.
I can't thank you enough!

Sincerely,

Gary Milcheck

He had a successful career in Berlin but returned to Switzerland after the advent of the Nazis. His architectural style was somewhat similar to that of Erich Mendelsohn. The staircase of the laboratory is in normal use but well preserved.
