OK - so - since that recipe is all over the internet...... and since....... I needed........

So..... in July, 2005, I went to Orchard Supply and Hardware in San Rafael, CA..... looking for ammonium phosphate.

There was "Super Phosphate" aka "0-52-0". After researching that, it appears that that is 52% Phosphate, and no ammonium content...... If there was an ammonium component, it would be "%-52-0", with the "%", being the ammonium percentage. As far as the lament that the chain stores displaced knowledgeable salespeople - it's true. Nobody had any idea what ammonium phosphate was, what the "x-x-x" rating for fertilizers meant......

Going back to OSH.

As far as ammonium chloride....... sigh....... the chain drug stores, Walgreens, Merrills.... nadda - At least they had a pharmacy department. They both suggested Jack's Drug store in San Anselmo, CA. "They have everything we don't have."
I think that Jack's is or was owned by, when I was a kid, Jimmy Normandi, aka "Jimmy Sierra", if you are into treasure hunting with metal detectors. Since Jack's was closed on Sunday...........
I ordered ammonium chloride on eBay. $20ish for 10lbs? Something like that. Waiting for delivery.

Oh - as far as to whether my new acoustic mat was fireproof.. I punched out a 3/8 disc of it and.... def., it wasn't fireproof. (but it would be great to have when I was a Boy Scout and trying to start a fire with sparks......) It was pretty hard to put out, actually.
I'd say that it glowed and burned with a slightly oily "shop rag" sort of enthusiasm....... that is: dull but persistently glowing.

Incidentally - at OSH, the "grommet repair kits" (I needed to put some metal lined grommets in my acoustic mats)  weren't stocked near the tarps, they were over by the bulk rope, cable, rubber sheet area. I do lament the requirement that speaking English isn't a requirement for citizenship, anymore....... Damn the volvo driving liberals!  <snicker!>

FIREPROOFING WOOD

Important Note: This  treatment will not make it impossible for wood to burn, just harder for the wood to catch fire.

Into 2 quarts water, mix

• 1/2 cup zinc chloride (available from feed and grain dealer)
• 1/4 cup ferric chloride (available from chemical supply house)
• 3 tablespoons boric acid (available from drugstore) and
• 3 tablespoons ammonium phosphate (available from garden supply store)

Spray or brush on 2 or 3 coats.

This preparation can be used in buildings, for outdoor furniture, camping equipment, etc.

FIREPROOFING CHRISTMAS TREES

Into 1 gallon water mix

• 1 cup ammonium sulphate (available from garden supply store)
• 1/2 cup boric acid (available from drugstore) and
• 2 tablespoons borax (available from grocery or hardware store)

Mix well. Pour into a spray bottle. Mist onto on tree and pour the remainder into the tree stand instead of in water.

KEEPING CHIMNEY FLUE FREE OF SOOT

Mix 1 cup salt with 1 cup zinc oxide powder (available at ceramic shop or drugstore) and sprinkle on hot fire. This will help keep the chimney flue clean.
